WMC Senior Care Basket Weave Art

Residents at WMC-Senior Care watched as Tanya Whiddle, Activity Assistant demonstrated and taught how to weave strips of yarn on a plate. One resident, Mary White, acknowledges that it first looked difficult, but she was willing to give it a try and learned that once you got the hang of it, it was easy to do. “

Basket weaving has been around for many centuries but in today’s society, it is becoming an almost lost art.  Residents enjoyed reminiscing about the art and Ruth Fulton shared that when she was nine years old, around 1935, she remembered going to the park in Union, Mississippi where she would watch the Indians weave baskets.

When asked what they planned to do with the baskets, Bobbie Pass, Resident said she will keep her Mardi Gras beads in the one she was making.

It took a while for the residents to complete the baskets and some will finish their project tomorrow. “It challenges them cognitively and physically,” said Tany Whiddle, AA, explaining the weaving technique is good for the residents’ hand movements.
It was a great time of learning, reminising and making something each can take back to his or her room to use.
