Stephanie Black, a Social Worker at Winston Medical Center, has been integrating Art Therapy into the activities program at Winston Medical Center Nursing Home. “The residents have been thoroughly enjoying learning the different aspects of art itself.”
“As an expressive medium, art can be used to help residents communicate, overcome stress, and explore different aspects of their own personalities” states Black.
Black has attended and completed Art Museum School at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, and the Dallas Museum of Art in Texas, and has been a free lanced artist for over 25 years. She earned her bachelor’s of Arts and Sciences at Mississippi State University with a degree in Social Work.
Stephanie’s inspiration stems from watching the residents use the creative process of art making to help them improve and enhance their physical, mental, and emotional well-being, as it helps them develop interpersonal skills, evokes reminiscence, helps reduce stress, and increases self-awareness and self-esteem. During all sessions, Black reminds residents that there is no right or wrong way of producing art. It is their inner perception of images, thoughts, and ideas that are of primary importance, and whatever they produce, is a beautiful art piece.
Black intends to continue to do Art Therapy with the residents and display their weekly art work in the main hallway of the nursing home in Art Gallery type of display with the title of the piece of art, along with the art medium used, and the residents names who participated.
An Art Exhibit for the community will be planned in the upcoming months to allow the residents to show his or her art work.
