World Alzheimer’s Month is the international campaign every September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia.
2 out of every 3 people globally believe there is little or no understanding of dementia in their countries. The impact of World Alzheimer’s Month is growing, but the stigmatization and misinformation that surrounds dementia remains a global problem that requires global action.
Memory loss can be a symptom of dementia and so it is important to see your provider to ensure you have access to the right support and services. Many people are reluctant to see their physician with concerns about their memory but other conditions such as stress, depression and certain physical conditions can all affect memory and so it is important to see your provider to rule out other causes which might be treatable.
For people who do receive a diagnosis of dementia, there is now a large amount of post diagnosis support available for the person with dementia and their caregivers, including support groups, information packs and community support. The earlier people receive a diagnosis, the sooner they can plan for the future.
